About the Survey

The American Library Association and the Information Policy & Access Center at the University of Maryland, in partnership with the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), are conducting a national survey of public libraries focused on the role of public libraries in building digitally inclusive communities. Documenting the role of public libraries in digital inclusion is critical to communicating the value of public libraries in their communities as key providers of public access technologies, digital literacy, and services to support employment/workforce development, education, civic engagement, and health and wellness. The survey is sponsored through a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Participating in the survey will enable your library to:

  • Better understand its community's needs, challenges, and opportunities through interactive tools and how your library's services add value to your community.
  • Access critical local, state, and national data that you can communicate with decision makers about the value of your library's technology-enabled services and public access technologies.
  • Articulate how your library helps build a digitally inclusive community, supporting 21st century workforce development, digital literacy, education, and a healthy community.
  • Identify where your library's services and resources are meeting community needs and where there might be room for improvement or a need for new partners to extend the library's reach.

The survey builds upon previous national surveys of public library Internet studies, most recently known the Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study (PLFTAS, http://www.ala.org/research/initiatives/plftas). Since 1994, these surveys have charted the progress of public library use of and interaction with the Internet, collecting data on broadband connectivity, numbers of public access computers, technology training, and more.
